The Dinner Lady Menus To Go
School meals compliant menus: Jeanette Orrey (the Dinner Lady) & HET have joined forces to do all the hard work!

Are your school menus food and nutrient based standards compliant?

We offer a full range of services from nutritional compliance checks for your own menus, to a complete ‘off the shelf’ package of pre compliant recipes and menus.

If you still need compliant, seasonal menus or wish to have your own menus or recipes analysed then we have a great range of services to offer which will help you get the right menu for your school.

WHAT’s THE HURRY?

By law schools should already be meeting the relevant School Food Standard, in particular the Nutrient Based Standards (Primary schools should be meeting these now and Secondary and special schools by September 2009).

Adopting a new set of compliant menus and recipes that have been tried and tested in schools will remove the need to spend significant time and resource having your existing menus nutritionally analysed and then adapted until they are compliant.  So let’s help reduce some of the hard work, saving you valuable time. However if you want a more bespoke approach then let us help you with our personalised, flexible service.

School Nutrition Action Groups are school based alliances in which staff, pupils and caterers, supported by health and education professionals work together to review and expand the range of food and drink to increase the uptake of a healthier diet and ensure consistent messages from the curriculum and food service.

The Food for Life Partnership

HET has partnered with the Soil Association, the Focus on Food Campaign and Garden Organic for a 5 year Lottery funded initiative. The Food for Life Partnership works to transform school and community food culture across England and aims to reach out through schools to give communities access to seasonal, local and organic food, and access to the skills they need to cook and grow fresh food for themselves.

HET will provide professional expertise and guidance to support and enable flagship schools and communities to audit their local food culture and develop their whole school food policy and action plan.

There will be 180 schools in England who will become flagship schools and more than 3600 Food for Life Partnership Mark schools going for Gold by 2011.

Best in Class is a scheme designed to recognise best practice across the whole school catering provision. The scheme will build into a ‘snapshot’ listing of schools who have achieved success in one or more areas of their school meals service, with demonstrable benefits to the school and its pupils. Through Best in Class we can share best practice nationwide, so that successful ideas can be adapted and adopted in other areas.

HET welcomes launch of the SFT Voluntary Code of Practice for drinks in schools

Joe Harvey, Director Health Education Trust,  explains, "We are delighted that the School Food Trust have announced and adopted the VCoP. HET have led the campaign for healthier food and drinks in schools, in particular in vending machines, for many years and have a high expectation that schools and industry will find these new standards an exciting opportunity to improve services to children".

HET have always advocated a strict line on drinks and are pleased that this will be adopted now by more manufacturers, through the voluntary code. Our own Real Choice scheme was first established in 2005 to raise the standard of school vending & snacking operations- with criteria for both snacks and drinks. HET's Real Choice scheme is an independent, thorough evaluation scheme carried out by a registered nutritionist, designed to make clear exactly which products meet the requirements of the School Food Standards and the VCoP. Through the SFT VCOP,  companies can sign up on the SFT website to declare their support. Additionally, and to provide full confidence to schools- and parents, our Real Choice scheme provides an opportunity for specific named products that meet the VCOP to be clearly listed.

‘Water Cooler Guidance’ for Schools

HET has written and produced this free downloadable guidance for schools on the use of water coolers to help ensure that the highest standards possible prevail in the selection, provision, installation and maintenance of water coolers in schools.

In schools, ‘good hydration helps to reduce tiredness, irritability, and increases concentration. It contributes to a more settled and productive learning environment’. (House of Commons written answer by Ann Keen – Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, DOH – 16/07/2007).

This guidance can be usefully adapted and applied to other public institutions such as leisure services, hospitals and prisons.
